Abortion in Europe: Time to relax restrictions?

Conservatives say more must be done to protect unborn children, while some liberals see a Europe-wide trend to undermine women’s rights.

Poles have stared down their government’s proposed ban on abortion. Massive protests and strikes forced the ruling conservative party to withdraw a bill that would have outlawed abortion in almost every circumstance. But Poland isn’t the only European nation with strict abortion laws. In Malta, it is completely banned. And last year, in Spain, the upper house of parliament moved to tighten some abortion regulations.
