En 1968, Elvis est à la croisée des chemins. Sa carrière s'est enlisée dans des films à petit budgets, les Beatles et la British Invasion lui font penser que ses meilleurs jours sont derrière lui... Les producteurs de télé Bob Finkel et Steve Binder pensent le contraire, et lui proposent une émission spéciale pour reconquérir son public, le tout totalement sous son contrôle artistique. Ce show enregistré en plusieurs sessions en juin 68 montre Elvis dans son élément, affuté dans un costume de cuir devenu mythique. On y découvre une nouvelle chanson, If I can dream, inspirée par les morts récentes de Martin Luther King et de Robert Kennedy ainsi que ses plus grands hits. Le show fait un carton d'audience le 3 décembre 68 et la carrière d'Elvis est relancée. Pour la première fois dans un seul produit, ce coffret deluxe 5 CD + 2 BR propose : tous les morceaux originaux ainsi que les vidéos avec en plus des prises inédites, des studios outtakes, un livre de 84 pages et l'histoire racontée au travers d'interviews conduites pour le documentaire The searcher.
