How to end Gaza war after Sinwar's death? Ukraine, Meloni and the US election
Edité par France 24 - 2024
Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni arrives in Lebanon, the first international leader to visit since Israel's incursion into the country at the start of the month. Italy has a thousand troops based in the south of the country as part of the UN peacekeeping mission, which has been in the firing line in recent days, with five staff injured, four of them by Israeli fire.
A farewell to Europe. President Joe Biden is in Berlin to receive the highest civil honours, the Order of Merit, as the outgoing US president is joined by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The leaders are jointly urging other NATO countries to sustain their support for Ukraine, as the conflict enters its third winter.
- Note
Hamas confirms its political and military leader Yahya Sinwar has been killed by Israel, 24 hours after IDF forces announced his death in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. In a defiant video speech, an official for the Iranian-backed militant group said Sinwar’s demise would not mean the release of Israeli hostages, unless the IDF withdraws from the Gaza Strip.
