Senegalese "Tirailleurs" were soldiers from France's West African colonies who served in the French army in both World Wars. In 1940, many were made prisoners by the Germans who held them in forced labour camps in France. The Tirailleurs were sent back home after the war was over. Yet on December 1st, 1944, dozens were killed or injured, officially after military police forces moved in to suppress a mutiny. But some historians have another outlook on this dark chapter of France's history.
