In March 2013, Cyprus was on the verge of bankruptcy, needing 17 billion euros to save its economy. In exchange for a loan, the European Union imposed a tax on bank deposits. But a year later, Cyprus is still struggling to recover. Soaring unemployment, bankruptcies and growing insecurity are pushing many into poverty. Increasing numbers of Cypriots are turning to charities and the state for help. As Cyprus hopes for signs of growth, ordinary Cypriots are helping each other.
